What Are Adaptogens? Here’s Everything You Need To Know About Them

I became a cosmetologist to help people heal their skin concerns with an ultimate goal of creating a skincare line one day that will explore holistic ingredients and something that will bind wellness, cultural roots, and literature together. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by biology, the wonders of nature, and how not only modern science but millennia-old traditions that leverage nature for better, more holistic living and healing. Today, as the Head of Research and Innovation at Aminu skincare, I’m getting to turn my dreams into reality by applying my knowledge of adaptogens and how they can benefit our skin with products that anyone and everyone can use.

WHAT ARE ADAPTOGENS?

When we talk about adaptogens, we usually focus on their ability to manage stress, which is a crucial factor that can adversely affect our skin along with other organs. In this context, it’s vital to understand the relationship between stress and our skin before we delve into the specifics of adaptogens.

Stress is a complex term that can have various implications. Without getting too technical, mental stress prompts the body to release hormones like cortisol and go in an over-defensive mode, which can cause sebaceous glands to produce more oil, leading to breakouts and acne. An inflamed complexion, such as redness, hives, extreme dehydration, dryness, and flakiness, can be a sign that your face is bearing the brunt of your inner burdens.

Regardless of what’s happening in our life, we all face environmental stress, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun and exhaust fumes from cars on the street. UV rays and environmental pollution create free radicals that react with our skin cells and cause oxidative damage. Oxidative damage leads to overproduction of oil, hyperpigmentation, and even premature aging.

HOW DO ADAPTOGENS HELP?

Adaptogens are broadly those herbs, mushrooms, and plants that have a powerful antioxidant profile, allowing them to thrive in harsh environments. They were once known as “tonics for longevity” and valued for their ability to promote overall health and vitality by countering the oxidative stress on your body  (& skin). Studies have shown that adaptogens such as ashwagandha, rhodiola, ginseng, reishi mushrooms, and licorice root can protect our skin from stress and keep it healthy. I have incorporated some of them in the skincare range at Aminu.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM ADAPTOGENS?

Anyone who lives in a fast-paced environment, especially in the city, can benefit from adaptogens. Simply put, adaptogens are nature’s shield against stress. By protecting our skin, we can prevent adverse reactions and keep our skin looking and feeling great before the damage is beyond repair. And it’s not just for humans! Adaptogens are also used in traditional veterinary medicine to help animals cope with stress and stay healthy.

Fun fact: even Siberian tigers rely on adaptogenic herbs to survive their harsh winters!
