5 Beauty Routines I Didn’t Know I’d Inherit from My Mother

A story of strength, silk, and being nourished from the inside out.

Some inherit cheekbones or heirlooms.
I inherited rituals.

They came not in the form of instruction, but through quiet, consistent acts: warm oils, strong fabrics, golden spices, and the sound of her humming a Bollywood song as she stirred a pot of ghee-roasted besan. Growing up with a Rajasthani mother meant being raised on a heady mix of bold colors, bolder opinions, and beauty secrets that she never once called “self-care.” But everything she did—whether simmering ghee till golden or smoothing oil into my hair with battlefield-level determination—was care in its truest form.

My mother, rooted in her bold, beautiful Rajasthani heritage, understood that beauty wasn’t just skin deep. It was about nourishment, richness, and strength.

Here are five beauty rituals I didn’t realize I was inheriting—until one day, they revealed themselves not just in my routine, but in my way of being.

1. Nourishment Starts From Within

Before it was a trend, my mom lived it. The foods she fed us were rich, not just in taste, but in purpose. To build strength. To carry glow from the inside out. A bowl of dal baati on a cold winter evening, khichdi laced with turmeric when we were under the weather—each dish was her way of fortifying us. Now, when I layer on skincare, I seek that same intention: not surface-level radiance, but deep nourishment.

2. Rich Rituals > Fast Fixes

My mother never rushed beauty. Whether she was massaging oil into her scalp or applying a homemade ubtan, everything was a ritual. A rhythm. She never chased trends—she trusted time. Now, I find myself reaching for products that echo that richness. Textures that are indulgent, ingredients that are potent, and scents that feel like home.

3. Silk-Wrapped Strength

When I returned to India after years away, I watched my mother unfold her old Muga silk sari—the same one I remembered from childhood. Time had passed. But that sari? Still golden. Still glowing. Still strong. Muga silk, native to Assam, is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world—rich in proteins, radiant in hue, and nearly impossible to tear. That sari didn’t just survive the decades—it embodied them.

4. Beauty Can Be Bold

Subtlety wasn’t always her thing. She came from Rajasthan, after all—a land of color, spice, and drama. She wore bold prints, and bindis that made a statement. There was nothing beige about her beauty. Now I get it. Why settle for flat when you can be vibrant?

5. Frozen Paranthas and Unspoken Love

No matter how much I insisted, my mother would smuggle frozen paranthas into my luggage before I flew back to New York. I’d roll my eyes, she’d pretend she didn’t hear me. But when I was jetlagged, homesick, and too tired to cook, those paranthas felt like a warm hug. Like her saying, “I see you. I’ve got you.” That, too, was beauty. Nourishment. Love wrapped in ghee and foil.

This Mother’s Day, I proudly share that the roots of my journey were laid when I was in my mother’s arms. Inspired by her unwavering strength and the rituals she passed down, the Amrutini collection is a tribute to that legacy. Crafted with rare, regional ingredients like golden Muga silk and Makaibari Silver Tips Imperial tea, and enhanced through advanced biotransformation technology, this collection aims to nourish, fortify, and restore—much like the care I received from her. It’s one of our finest collections, meant to wrap you in the closest thing to a mother.
